Ad10s, Diego: Maradona's shirts. It's weird, everything is spinning and a couple of tears that we never thought would fall water the eyes. Diego Maradona , in body, is no longer with us. The Fluff, the Ten, the Cosmic Kite ... D10S is dead. His dreams, his challenge to power, his dribbles, his football, yes, they remain with and beyond us. Immortals. Eternal.
Maradona was not a perfect person, it is known, but the way in which he embodied illusions was not produced by any other footballer in history. Ideas stumble. For this reason, instead of continuing without sense, without direction, what comes out is a tribute through the colors he defended and the shirts he wore. I hope it is a fair tribute.
Diego Maradona's Kits
Argentinos Juniors
The intense and vibrant red of the Bicho was the first piece of cloth that Maradona defended in the leading role. I use plain and diagonal models, almost always with the adidas trefoil as a sponsor. The most iconic? The one under the auspices of Austral airlines instead of the Argentinian shield.
1976 - Diego Armando Maradona makes his debut with 15 years, 11 months and 20 days with the Argentinos Juniors shirt against Talleres de Córdoba; the immortal 'Pelusa' played 166 games and scored 115 goals with the Bicho de La Paternal
Boca Juniors (Part I)
In 1981, Diego el Pelusa came to Boca Juniors and began the greatest romance of his career. In his first period with the xeneizes he was only a year, but his image with Boca's adidas jersey, without sponsors and the CABJ initials on the gold band are truly legendary.
Barcelona
Hepatitis, a broken ankle after a criminal attack by Andoni Goikoetxea and a pitched battle against Athletic Bilbao marked Diego's two years in Catalonia. It wasn't his best period, but that Meyba kit with the “10” is truly a treasure.
Napoli
The most glorious years of his career were lived in Napoli. There, by the way, he is a hero, he is god. For this reason, Maradona's shirts between 1984 and 1991 are true sacred robes. Of all, the Linea Time model with Cirio as the main sponsor and the mythical NR elastics with Buitoni and Mars stand out.
Seville
One of the most remembered shirts from Maradona's time at Sevilla is a Bukta with Super Nintendo as sponsor. The funny thing is that it was barely used during just two friendly matches against Bayern Munich.
There were some more models that 1992-93, but the most used was a Front Runner model (also belonging to Bukta) with two red lines on the shoulders.
Newell's Old Boys
Back in Argentina, Maradona ended up at Newell's Old Boys. He didn't play much, just five games. Enough, yes, to wear this beautiful model in the middle of the leprosy -with alternating collar and sleeves- with adidas and Yamaha as sponsor.
Boca Juniors (Part II)
In 1995, Diego returns to the love of his life. The return shirt is one created by the Olan family and stands out for the initials CABJ on the neck. Parmalat and Quilmes were the sponsors of those kits.
In 1997, Maradona said goodbye to professional football in a classic against River Plate. Boca's jacket was then already produced by Nike and adorned the yellow stripe with white edges.
Argentina Selection
Maradona defended the Albiceleste from the Sub 20 in 1977 until the World Cup in the United States in 1994. The adventure includes a World Cup, the 1986 one, and that of course transformed those shirts into the most iconic of the Ten. They were created by Le Coq Sportif and of the two, the blue used against England has the better history .
Argentina, in fact, had played in blue in the previous match with Uruguay, but with perspiration and sweat they ended up being very heavy. The coach, Carlos Bilardo, was bothered by this and when he found out that they would play again in blue against the English, he asked the delegates of the selection to look for more appropriate shirts in stores in Mexico City. After finding them, AFA patches were improvised and silver football numbers were attached the day before the game.
"The Hand of God" and "The Best Goal in History" would later transform it into a centerpiece in the annals of world football.
For you, of all the Maradona shirts, which one is your favorite?
